Success Stories
Connectory.com is only as successful as its proven ability to link companies
to each other to pursue opportunities, solve problems, find similarly
directed colleagues, and achieve business growth. Add to that the goal of
the Defense Logistics Agency Connectory Project -- to link buyers and
suppliers in way that supports our nation's warfighters -- and you will
understand the importance of capturing the "Success Stories" you see on this
page.
We update the Success Stories list regularly and would be glad to add your
story to the list. Please contact us when you know the Connectory has
provided an opportunity, a sale, an answer to a question or problem and we
will review it with you and post it on this page.
Navy KVM Switches Navy
requirement for KVM switches and other critical network components for installation on Navy
submarine could not be satisfied through usual government channels in less than four months. In Connectory , found two companies that could provide required equipment (using a prime’s
contract with the Navy) in less than three weeks AND at the reduced government supply source price. One company is located
in Rancho Cucamonga; the other – a small, disadvantaged company – is located in Irvine.

Navy Memory Upgrade Navy prime contractor
used the Connectory to locate a source of memory upgrade for a submarine
communications network from a Santa Clara company who was able to provide the needed upgrade quickly, at a fraction of
the price the Government anticipated.

Miniature Network Switches Use Connectory to locate California office of a distributor of miniature network switches to
provide needed components for installation in operational Navy communications center supporting the Atlantic Fleet.
Attempts to locate the Maryland based office of the company, identified as the original source, were unsuccessful. Until the Connectory search turned up the Temecula division and secured the item, the Navy was
considering another slower, more expensive solution.

SATCOM Computer Consulting Located
San Diego computer consulting company in the Connectory to “trouble shoot” and
repair a downed SATCOM network installed at a secure, operational satellite communications center for $1,500. Without this
intervention, the government project would have spent over $100,000 would need to be spent to acquire a new network node.

Consortium Partnership to win SeaPort e
rolling Used the Connectory to identify four new companies who joined
Consortium to provide a winning proposal team for the SeaPort e rolling admissions solicitation . All Navy
systems commands will move to use of the SeaPort e contract vehicle and NO new prime contract awards are anticipated
(although subcontractors may be added via a simple process). Therefore, the Connectory
can add needed expertise to its team as the Navy identifies specific requirements.

AMPRO The U.S. Air Force – trying to
solve an $800M per year problem associated with corrosion on its tactical containers and radomes – worked with SDSU to use
the Connectory to locate companies with coating or other anti-corrosion technologies that
might be able to provide a solution. They originally contacted SDSU because the Air Force believed that answer required an
academic in chemistry or materials engineering, but the Connectory identified several kinds
of companies with the required capabilities. They contacted American Metal Processing (AMPRO) in El Cajon where
owner Dan Cummings suggested a less research intensive and more flexible approach. The Air Force asked AMPRO to compete
in its Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) grant process that led to the award of a Phase I concept grant (at $90,000) and
a Phase II R&D grant (at $750,000). AMPRO is not the kind of company that typically attends federal research opportunity
seminars. Without the Connectory they would never have been asked to participate in the solicitation. Since this time AMPRO
has won two more Phase I SBIRs and is in the process of commercializing its technology from its first AF SBIR win.

Apparel Manufacturer Match-Making
Efforts Used the Connectory to “match” a small, HUBZone company with an
established, U.S. apparel manufacturer to determine how best to gain access to DoD military clothing contract opportunities.
Without this match-making effort that identified a contractor savvy in government buying arena, the manufacturer almost gave us
pursuit of the military market because of its frustration in navigating the buying agency hurdles. With the support of the small
HUBZone Company, he will learn enough to be successful. Now, both are continuing to work to provide U.S.-made apparel for
our warfighters.

showcase. Via an invitation-only event, these companies met directly with NASA reps and with three company executives who
have had success with NASA (also profiled in the Connectory ). At least two of these
companies are in negotiation with NASA on technology partnership transactions to fill critical needs. Another company has
teamed with one of the Success Story companies to work on an MDA project.

San Diego World Trade Center and the U.S. Department of
Commerce Where's the first place that the San Diego World Trade Center and the U.S. Department of Commerce go
when they get a qualified trade lead for their “Inside Track for Exports to Asia?” To the Connectory Network, that's where. The SDWTC began using the Connectory several years ago when it launched its Maquila Supplier Project. Staff searches of
Connectory have saved its staff over 20 hours a week because the level of detail in the
profiles allowed staff to make decisions about contacting a company more quickly, says Hugh Constant, Vice President,
SDWTC. Now the SDWTC is using the Connectory Network on its Asia trade project and
highlights Connectory on its Trade Resources page. Companies are exporting their
products to Asia because of being “detected” in the Connectory.

A Leading Biotech Company A leading
San Diego biotech company , found the process of putting together a Connectory profile
was valuable for the company and worth the effort. Its Corporate Communications coordinator said about the Connectory that it took a while to pull together all of the information from various departments but,
“Once I had the information, it probably only took a few hours at most." She suggested that other companies could find that
development of a profile can serve as a comprehensive listing for the company capabilities, once created." She went on to say,
"to have all of the information in one place is a great resource and was part of the motivation behind us completing the [profile]
development. So often as organizations grow pertinent information [that defines company capabilities] becomes scattered.
Centralizing it can be a great time saver. The Connectory is a great resource for California
firms.”

Industrial Robotic Machinery Company looking for Metal
Stamping Firms The Connectory Project received call from the chief buyer for
a large manufacturer of industrial robotic machinery located near the U.S.-Mexico border . On a referral from the Otay
Mesa Chamber, he heard that there was a website that listed manufacturers and industrial suppliers. He was desperately looking
for a metal stamping firm within a 100-mile radius of Tecate as his current supplier had suddenly gone out of business. We
logged onto the Connectory together, conducted a simple search, and reviewed a few
promising profiles. Once he saw the level of detail Connectory provides on company
capabilities, he exclaimed, "This thing is the greatest tool I've ever seen!" hung up the phone, and went in search of a metal
stamping firm.

Graffiti Patrol Dennis Twiss, the owner of
Graffiti Patrol sent an e-mail to the Connectory one week after posting his profile
stating that he had already received three inquiries and made one sale and that these were leads he would not have received in
any other way. Since that time, he has won several jobs via his Connectory profile including
some with local governments and non-profit agencies. (He always asks how a customer finds him so he knows the Connectory was the source of the lead.)

"The Connectory Saved us Time and
Money" A precision machining contract manufacturer in Santee that specializes in after-market parts
for motorcycles was experiencing a production backlog because of the difficulty in hiring trained machinists. They used the
Connectory to locate 10 to 12 very small machine shops, with specific capabilities, within 3
miles of their facility. The owner said, "I don't know if any of these shops will work out, but we now have 10 more possibilities
than we had yesterday, and that saves us time and money."

San Diego-based aerospace manufacturer required an environmental soil assay. Contacts with their previous environmental

Packaging Manufacturer A Border region
Packaging Manufacturer used the Connectory Network to locate a certified
professional design engineer to add to its team bidding on a large defense contract. The combination of the manufacturer and
design engineer constituted the winning team for the contract. Other packaging firms located in San Diego County have
received defense business via the Connectory as packaging because it appears to be an
afterthought until delivery to the government makes it critical. In fact, there have been several follow-up calls and e-mails from
packaging firms throughout San Diego/Imperial.

novel promotional item. He wanted metal tokens, logo-stamped , and powder coated in multiple e colors. He used the Connectory Network to locate advertising specialty, metal stamping, and powder coating firms to
determine if his approach were feasible economically. He told Connectory staff, "Even if I
find my solution costs too much, the Connectory is saving me valuable hours of telephone

San Diego Regional EDC Client Services
Specialists for the San Diego Regional EDC use the Connectory Network regularly.
One interesting example involved a Taiwanese electronics manufacturer who was making a site selection visit to two U.S. cities --
Phoenix and San Diego. The San Diego EDC received less than 12 hours notice of his impending arrival and had only one day
with the company president. The company president said that one his main considerations in selecting a site for his factory was
the availability of local, qualified suppliers. He named EDM (Electronic Discharge Machining) wire machining and powder
coating as important examples. Here’s what the San Diego EDC Client Services Specialist said about using the Connectory :
"The Taiwanese businessman was waiting in our conference room. I ran into my office, logged onto the Connectory and returned two minutes later with three good profiles of companies with EDM
capabilities and 10 powder-coating companies. The detailed information in the profiles intrigued the electronics company
president, who then asked if he could visit one of the supplier firms. Having the contact and capabilities information made it easy
for me to choose a good candidate. It was a matter of minutes to call a Santee Tool and Machining Company to arrange a
last minute tour of the facility. Bill Alt's facility was as impressive as his Connectory profile
and gave us major points. The Connectory.com Network offers Economic Development
professionals a powerful tool for business attraction, retention and expansion."
